When you’re playing a chord on guitar, how do you know which harmonica to play and where the notes are that match the chord?
Music Theory is required. Not to worry. It isn’t difficult and will make you a better musician.
Music theory aids in determining which notes on the harmonica match the chord on guitar and which notes are used to make up great sounding melodies.
The rest of the Guitar and Harmonica video series is comprised of play along exercises demonstrating what notes to play and the corresponding holes – blow or draw, when playing chords on guitar.

Why Take Music Lessons At Harp ‘N’ Guitar?

The Benefits to Learning Music are Tremendous and Well Documented

Improvement of Brain Function – child musicians perform better in school in all subjects. For the adult, studies show that learning a musical instrument keeps the mind alert and active and can lead to an improvement in memory. Mathematical ability, reading and comprehension, and concentration have all been shown to sharpen and improve by learning music.

Stress Relief – dispel the pressures of the day to day grind by doing something enjoyable for yourself.

Enhance Coordination – rhythmic movement, breathing, and listening are all utilized and coordinated when playing music. The more playing you do, the better this coordination gets.

Sense of Accomplishment – when learning a new instrument, practice leads to measureable improvement which creates a sense of achievement that can be a very rewarding experience.

Life Improvement – playing music is fun and immensely satisfying. If your goal is to get up on stage and play for others, I can personally attest to the fact that there is no better high than cheers from an audience that is enjoying listening to you play. If your goal is to be able to jam with others, a whole new sense of camaraderie develops between fellow musicians. You may simply want to play for yourself. Start learning now and see how good it feels to cross that off your bucket list.

Learn At Your Own Pace

Online lessons allow you to learn at your own pace. Learning music should be stress free without the pressure or limits of a weekly lesson.
Being online allows you to learn what you want, where you want, when you want.

Receive Quality Instruction On Two Instruments For The Price Of One

Adding harmonica to rhythm guitar totally increases the Blow-People-Away factor.
And now you can get the instruction you need, all in one place, and all for the cost of a single instrument lesson subscription.

Ready To Improvise?

Just because your favourite song doesn’t have harmonica in the original doesn’t mean you can’t add some.
Harp ‘N’ Guitar methodology gives you the tools and confidence to play melodies and solos on harmonica while playing an acoustic rhythm accompaniment. Find out where the melody notes are for any song so you play them and improvise upon them.

New Material Added Regularly

Harp ‘N’ Guitar is continually growing. New videos are added regularly to address and respond to Students’ needs.
Circle of fourths and fifths
This is what I do. I have students locally, online and through this website.
I want to help you learn to play Harp ‘N’ Guitar.

Music Theory Is The Key

Getting a basic grasp on music theory makes becoming a good musician so much easier.
And it’s really quite simple.
And I use music theory in this course to help relate the guitar and harmonica together to:
* Choose the correct key harmonica
* Show where the chord tones and scale tones are on harmonica to allow you to play melodies and improvise
I’ll show you what it’s all about.

What You Will Need

The Harp

Adding harmonica to rhythm guitar totally increases the Blow-People-Away factor

We will be sticking to the 10 hole Major Diatonic Harmonica throughout the course.
As you progress as a harmonica player, you will want to acquire harmonicas in different keys but for all the core video lessons you’ll only need one here – Key of C.
My personal favourite is the Hohner Special 20 but as long as it’s a decent C Major Diatonic Harmonica, that’s good.

The Guitar

I am playing an acoustic six string guitar in these lessons but the information is transferable to the electric or classical guitars as well.

Harmonica Holder

The harmonica holder is very inexpensive with different designs coming out all the time.
I’ve used the same holder for over twenty years now and chances are that you will only ever need one as well.

Tuner and Capo

The tuner is great for keeping the guitar in tune but is also excellent for practicing harmonica bends.
By using a capo, different guitar chord shapes can be explored while still being able to stay in key with the C harmonica.

Broadband Internet Connection

Videos take up some bandwidth and to get a good viewing experience, a decent broadband internet connection is needed. Chances are that this won’t be a problem. If you can watch videos online without a hiccup, then you’re good to go.

Java-enabled Web Browser + Adobe Reader

Javascript is a programming language used on most websites and this one is no different. It is also supported by web browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
Unless you have manually turned javascript off, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Supplemental learning materials are in pdf format and require Adobe Reader software in order to view. If it’s not already installed on your computer, then you can get it for free at adobe.com.

Patience, Willingness To Learn, Positive Attitude

You will achieve great progress with these three attributes.
Play for yourself.
Music will do you good.

Who is George Goodman

Harp N Guitar instructor George Goodman

Hey, George here.
I was the fifth of five kids in a musical family, born in the sixties and influenced by the music my older siblings were listening to including Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and The Band. What I consider to be some of the best music ever recorded.

There were always musical instruments around and everyone was encouraged to join in. Kind of like my place now.

I started on piano and migrated to saxophone in elementary school. I continued playing tenor sax throughout school and into college where I completed a commercial music diploma program at Capilano College, North Vancouver, in 1989 majoring on tenor saxophone.

I can’t remember ever not owning a harmonica and have had a guitar since high school. I made my first harmonica holder out of an old wire coat hanger after hearing an interview with Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders telling how she did that very thing.

Since then there has been countless bands and gigs, some jazz, some blues, but mostly and most happily classic rock n roll. My favourite gigs have been playing solo acoustic guitar, harmonica and vocals.

So music is one of the passions of my life.

George Goodman Logo
I have always had an affinity for teaching and passing my knowledge on and videos online provide the ultimate opportunity to do this. I currently have dozens of Youtube videos hosted on my website, GeorgeGoodman.com, instructing how to play great songs on guitar and harmonica. I’ve received over a million views and incredible support from Youtube viewers.

This tremendous response and support demonstrated to me that there is a large number of under-served musicians or musicians-to-be who would like to learn guitar and harmonica together and would benefit from a no-nonsense ( well maybe a little ) step by step series of videos detailing how to play both guitar and harmonica and then how to bring them together to learn how to play their favourite songs.

Harp ‘N’ Guitar is the result.
I am committed to helping you learn how to play Harp ‘N’ Guitar.
Stay Tuned.
Cheers,
George

What Others Are Saying

Kevin Murphy Guitar and Harmonica

Harp ‘N’ Guitar is an excellent method to develop guitar skills as well as acquiring a unique aptitude; playing guitar along with the harmonica.
A few months ago I purchased George’s book, Guitar and Harmonica Method, which I found very useful and interesting as it was written with a lot of humour. However, this series of videos not only explains the basics (important to understand why we do certain things in music) but also is much more extensive in its range and depth of the subjects. I don’t believe there is anything out there that even attempts to compete with it.
Kevin Murphy – Dunure, Scotland

Johnny Alexander

I’m a beginner harmonica player and the Harp ‘N’ Guitar website has helped me tremendously already!
George shows you the difference between harmonicas and what keys they come in and how to choose a decent one. George tells you how your posture should be, how to hold the harmonica and tells you how to breathe while playing. This course is a must for beginners in my opinion! Like he says In his video of practice tips always carry your harmonica with you. Well I always do, even while I’m at work!
Johnny Alexander – Grand Ledge Michigan

Mathieu van Schaik Harpist

Hi George,
I owe you the credits for my first stage performance.
I’m an advanced beginner on bluesharp, essentially focusing on techniques, not on performing.
Locally, every month we have a “Cover Sessions” where local, amateur, hobby and experienced musicians come together to cover mainstream songs. Last month the Band’s ‘The Weight’ was on the list. Your lesson on Youtube and GeorgeGoodman.com enabled me to master this song on harp, adjust it a little and join the musicians on stage.
Your new site HarpNGuitar.com helps me to connect guitar chords to what to play on harp. Essential for those songs where only guitar tabs are available.
Thanks, keep up the good work and best regards,
Mathieu
Mathieu van Schaik – Maarn, The Netherlands

I am 58 years old and I have been dabbling with the guitar (and harmonica) since I was a young person. I took lessons in the early years but never learned to play any music I enjoyed.
When I found your website it rekindled my interest in picking up the guitar again.
Using your approach I was able to play All Along The Watchtower and After Midnight in less than an hour of practice. Obtaining results this fast is really motivating! It’s like having you sit right across from me teaching me a private lesson!
Thanks for all the work you’ve put into this George. I look forward to using your new site and wish you continued success in your future endeavors.
Best Regards,
Brian Styles

This is exactly what I need. I have been playing the harmonica about a year and the guitar for many years. I am weak on the theory so I find your theory videos very helpful especially matching the guitar chords with notes on the harmonica. I also found your explanation of the specific notes on the guitar chords and your idea of singing to each chord and note very helpful as well.
I am very interested in the site, I am very impressed.
Thanks
Glen Mitchell

I live in Hawaii (Kauai) and want to start playing by myself. I am 66 y.o. I have played in a few bands stateside but want to shift from electric to acoustic guitar and harp as the mainstay of my style. I have a good voice and can play some harp. I feel the need for some mentoring, especially in the following areas: 1. Right hand technique and finger picking; 2. Learning songs combing both instruments with voice; 3. help with some arraingement of my own songs with the style you teach. I need to build a repetoir that will work in Kauai. You are very inspiring to me! Joseph
